Product Details

This listing is for a vintage Japanese wedding kimono (kakeshita - a kimono layer under the uchikake). Kakeshita are belted with a formal obi and worn underneath an uchikake wedding kimono, but they are no less sophisticated and elegant. Kakashita are typically lighter weight, with a lighter padding at the hem, a yuzen-dyed rather than woven fabric, and patterning that may have a "less patterned" area at the waist where the obi would be tied.

Blue wedding kimono like this were not as popular as other colors, so we are quite happy to be offering this one.  It is a deep, rich, ocean blue silk with a jacquard design of bishamon kikkou - a representation of tortoise shell which is an auspicious element signifying long life.

The design is completely embroidered by hand.  Red, silver and gold flowers, and a partially hidden imperial cart wheel appear thickly at the hem and convinues up the sleeves and over the shoulder.  So much hand work - must have taken many months. See the videos below on embroidery and how to wear or display Japanese wedding kimono.

White upper and red lower inside lining as well as red lining that peeks out at the sleeve openings.  There is one section that could be a blemish - or perhaps it is a section that should have been embroidered over, but was missed?  (Seems unlikely.) Still, it is barely noticeable and is located on the inside right panel, which would be covered when the kimono is worn or displayed.  See last photo.

If you plan to hang this kimono, we do offer wooden display rods in four colors - see tab at right. If you plan to wear this kimono and need a traditional obi, browse our  page.
